Tasmania has an area of 90,758 sq km and a population of around 500,000 people. Its capital city is Hobart.
Tasmania is the only island state of Australia. It is located 200 km from the south-eastern region of the continent, from which it is separated by the Bass Strait. A majority of the population lives around the coastal rivers—Tamar and Mersey in the north and Derwent and Huon in the south. The terrain has smoothened mountain ranges, although the central-eastern part is fairly flat in nature.
The Tasmanian Aborigines were the first to inhabit the island, but the arrival of immigrants resulted in changing cultural patterns. The island enjoys a European heritage that dates back to the early nineteenth century. Tasmanians are known as friendly, pleasant and welcoming people typical of the relaxed island lifestyle that is enjoyed here. |
