Western Australia: Introduction and History

Western Australia has an area of 2,050,900 sq km and a population of around 2.5 million. Its capital city is Perth.

Western Australia is the continent’s largest state (in terms of area) and covers nearly one-third of mainland Australia. It is bordered by the states of South Australia and the Northern Territory. The terrain mostly comprises a low plateau with less relief features and an average altitude of approximately 400 m. The remainder of the state is semi-arid. The national parks, however, have a plethora of waterfalls, rivers and gorges.

Residents of Western Australia are usually referred to as ‘sandgropers’. Indigenous Australians formed various tribes that branched out into the state, such as the Nyungah in the southwest, the Malkana around Shark Bay and the Wongai in the central desert region. These groups maintain a significant majority among the local population in the state.
