With the damming of the Molonglo River, Lake Burley Griffin was created in 1963 to complement and provide a reliable water source to the city of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. Today, the centrally-located artificial lake serves as a popular recreational hub, giving those with active lifestyles a place for their sports and leisure time.

Some of the most popular water activities at Lake Burley Griffin are rowing, fishing, sailing, swimming, while lakeside running, walking and biking are also common in the lake’s many parks, including Commonwealth, Kings, Weston, Grevillea and Lennox Gardens. For those who’d rather sit and marvel at the scenery or settle in with a good book, the area surrounding Lake Burley Griffin features plenty of beaches and picnic tables.

Lake Burley Griffin is also home to many events during various times of the year, including flower celebration Floriade, Canberra Festival, fireworks show Skyfire and the always-breathtaking New Year’s Eve fireworks display.
