The city of Tamworth is situated on the west part of the Great Dividing Range along the banks of the Peel River in New South Wales. The city is placed between two of the biggest cities in the east coast of Australia, Sydney and Brisbane. Tamworth occupies an area of 486.5 km². Chaffey Dam supplies water to the city. As per the census of 2006, the population of Tamworth is 42499, out of which 33475 remains in the urban area. The Tamworth Regional Council reports a population size of 54522 in 2005. The city is popularly known as the “Country Music Capital of Australia” as it hosts the Tamworth Country Music Festival at the end of January, every year. It is also named as “First City of Lights” as it was the first city in the southern hemisphere to introduce electric bulbs. The climate of Tamworth is on either extreme. It ranges from 3 degrees to 32 degrees. Rainfall is felt through out the year, which sometimes results in floods. The city hardly faces snow though frosts are common.
