Arnhem is situated in the north east of Northern Territory. The locality is nearly 500km away from Darwin. It covers an area of 97000 km2 that also includes the area of the Kakadu National Park. The region is named after the Dutch ship, Arnhem, which discovered the seaboard in 1623. The city stretches from the Gulf of Carpentaria to Port Roper along the margin of East Alligator River. Northeast Arnhem is the home for one of the largest tribes in Australia called “Yolngu people”. Arnhem is popular for its remoteness, art and tradition followed by its inhabitants. It has a tropical climate with wet and dry seasons. The temperature varies from 15 degrees to 33 degrees. According to 2007 census, the population of Arnhem was 16230. Nearly 40 different languages are spoken in this area. The city is famous for various art forms such as bark paintings, rock arts, stone arrangements and sand sculptures.
