The term Garig Gunak Barlu belongs to the name of an international park which is situated near the Cobourg Peninsula in the Northern Territory. The park is located around 216 km northeast of Darwin. It was formed by combining the Gurig National Park and Cobourg Marine Park. The park includes the whole of the Peninsula, Van Dieme Gulf the surrounding waters of the Arafura Sea and some of the closer islands. It occupies an area of 4500 km2. Cobourg Peninsula is the single National Park in the Northern Territory that contains adjacent oceanic areas and land. The park preserves a mosaic of sandy beaches, rainforest patches, lagoons, mangroves, marsh, sea grass pastures, dunes and associated coastal grasslands and affluent aquatic life. This park was the first park declared under the RAMSAR Convention owing to its noteworthy wetlands. Tourists are required to get permits to enter the park and to stay overnight. There are numerous commercial operators within the Park who cater to the needs of the visitors.
