Nhulunbuy can be described as a township created upon ‘Gove Peninsula’ within Australia’s Northern Territory.
Nhulunbuy came in to being in 1960s when a ‘deep water port’ and ‘bauxite mine’ were established. This region inside ‘North-east Arnhem Land’ has been habitat of ‘Yolngu Aboriginal’ population since around 40000 years.
In the year 1963, decision on the part of Federal government went on to exercise portion of the ‘land’ which was meant for ‘bauxite mine’ for being operated by ‘North Australian Bauxite and Alumina Company’, i.e. Nabalco, now called Rio Tinto Alcan. This idea was strongly opposed by Yirrkala’s Yolngu aborigines. This, in turn, drew the attention of people nationally as well as internationally. Thus, bark petition submitted by these people to ‘Australian House of Representatives’ hangs in ‘Parliament House, Canberra’.
The population of Nhulunbuy as per 2006 census was 4112.
