The township of Timber Creek is located in the Victoria Highway. It is situated about 285km west of Katherine and 193km east of the coastal line between Western Australia and the Northern Territory. It is a small area which is developing as a significant stopping point on the journey from Kimberley to the Territory. Timber Creek was discovered by A.C. Gregory. The area was traditionally, the land of the Aboriginal people of Ngaliwurra, who were acting as escorts for the local police. In 1898, a police station was first set up in Timber Creek. At the beginning, there was only a hut and a goat yard with dwellings made up of steel and iron.
Subsequently, the settlement area became an important harbour for the surrounding cattle stations. Victoria River down Station was predominant previously. The summers in Timber Creek are hot with a temperature ranging between 35 degrees and 25 degrees. The winters are warm with temperature varying between 19 degrees and 30 degrees.
