Ayr lies on the mouth of the River Ayr which flows into the Firth of Clyde. The town's population registered in the 2001 Census was 46,431. Being situated in the south west of Scotland, the area has a moderate maritime climate. Ayr's shipping industry has flourished over the years mainly because of the River Ayr. It had a good production for the making of textiles such as carpets and lining. The city has a number of things to attract tourists such as its pleasant sea front, the scenic surroundings, racecourses, theaters, bowling and swimming complexes and more. The County town of Ayr, in the heart of the Burns Country is a modern, busy shopping centre, which is another attraction for tourists visiting this place.
