Cooktown is a town situated in the northern portion of the east coast of Australia. It is actually at the mouth of the Endeavour River, located at Cape York Peninsula in North Peninsula. It lies in (15.45 S, 145.19 E). The total population of Cooktown is about 1,573 according to the 2001 census. Cooktown has an elevation of 6 meters (20 ft). It possesses a tropical wet savanna climate. The weather may vary from 32 degree Celsius to 17 degree Celsius on an average throughout the year. Cooktown is rich in deposits of quartz crystals. The quartz crystals collected are traded with Mossman, Cairns, etc. The Botanists throughout the world visit this place in order to collect various botanical specimens. The Palmer River passing through Cooktown has gold deposits. Cooktown is mainly occupied by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people. Cooktown acted as a major base for the Second World War.
