Tourist guide Mackay

Mackay is known as ‘The sugar capital of Australia’ as it produces more than a third of Australia’s cane sugar. It lies in the eastern coast of Queensland. It is surrounded by 31 beaches within a short driving distance. Harbor beach is famous for its locality and fishing hotspots. Due to heavy rainfall in 1958, Mackay was hit with heavy flooding at 9.14m. Fifty years after the disaster in 1958, Mackay had to face another major flood destroying 2000 homes in 2008. Mackay base hospital is one of the major hospitals in the city. The Pioneer valley hospital and Mater hospital also serve the needs of the sick and is located in the northern side.

The ‘Central Queensland University’ and ‘James Cook University’ are the two major universities in the city.
Rugby is a frequently played sport in the city. There are several well known personalities in the city such as Sandy Bondello, Nick Frost, Cathy Freeman and Benita Johnson, some of whom had taken part in the Olympic Games.
