Magnetic Island is only eight kilometres away from shore of Townsville, the biggest city of North Queensland, Australia. The island was named after its magnetic effect on the compass of the Captain Cook’s ship when he passed the magnetic island on a voyage towards the eastern coastline of Australia in the year 1770. The infrastructure and public facilities on the islet are administered by the council of Townsville City. Magnetic Island is a division of Electoral dominion of Townsville in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland. Unlike other islands you can see several small towns around the magnetic island. This island is old-fashioned rather than modern. The island has about 22 bays. Most of these bays are accessible only by the walking track or via boat. Radical bay and the Horseshoe Bay are situated at the northeast end of the magnetic island. There are several safe walking tracks at the north-eastern tip of the island.
