Tourist Guide Coorong National Park
Coorong, a national park of South Australia situated 156 km southeast of Adelaide. It is believed that the word Coorong is an altered form of the indigenous word kurangh, which means long neck. This version was made as a reference to the nature of the lagoon system. The term, Coorong is also thought to be from the native word Coorang, meaning sand dune. It was made as a reference to the sand dunes, which can be seen in between the Southern Ocean and the park. The western frame of Coorong starts from the Murray Mouth and Sir Richard Peninsula and goes around 130 km southeast. The park is home to the Younghusband Peninsula which divides Coorong from Encounter Bay. The park is close from Lake Alexandrina at Pelican Point. Coorong was built in 1966 as a haven for species of animals, fish and birds. It is a 467 km reserve area that attracts migratory species. Coorong promotes the coastal vegetation, coastal dune systems and lagoons.
