Tourist guide Gawler

Gawler can be reputedly mentioned as the 1st country town located in South Australia.

The name ‘Gawler’ has been derived from ‘George Gawler’, the 2nd governor of South Australia colony.

Gawler lies at the distance of 25 miles on the northern side of Adelaide, i.e. capital of South Australia. Moreover, it’s near to main wine-producing district pertaining to Barossa Valley.

From the topographical point of view, Gawler stands at confluence of 2 tributaries of Gawler River, South and North Para rivers, wherein they go on to emerge from ‘low hills’.

South Australia being one amongst the British colonies; had been established in the form of a ‘commercial venture’ by ‘South Australia Company’ via sale of productive land to ‘free settlers’ at 1 pound per acre. This city, i.e. Gawler got established via a 4000-scre ‘special survey’ applied by John Reid and Henry Dundas Murray; along with syndicate of 10 other colonists.

Gawler can be referred to as a ‘dormitory town’ with regards to Adelaide. Darren Lehmann, former player of Australian Cricket team had been born in this city in the year 1970.
