Goolwa can be described as one of the historic river ports on Murray River adjacent to Murray Mouth, South Australia. Moreover, it’s joined to Hindmarsh Island through a bridge.
The name ‘Goolwa’ literally means ‘elbow’ in ‘Ngarrindjeri’, i.e. dialect of Aborigines.
Goolwa lies at an approximate distance of 100 Km on the southern side of Adelaide; that too, at base of Alexandria Council. It lies in state ‘electoral district of Finniss’ and federal ‘Division of Mayo’. Prior to the year 1837, Goolwa had been briefly considered to be site of colony’s capital. Murray Mouth’s treacherous waters, however made it unsuitable with regards to shipping. First railway of Australia got built for connecting Goolwa to ‘Port Elliot’. Later on, extension happened till Victor Harbor. So, Goolwa’s significance in the form of a port declined.
Goolwa goes on to host South Australian Wooden Boat Festival every alternate year. It should be noted that odd-numbered sequence is followed.
The population has been estimated to be 6500.
