Burnie, which is named after William Burnie-The Director of the Van Diemen’s Land is a port city. The temperature in the summer ranges from 12.5 to 21 °C. Burnie receives 994 mm of rainfall yearly. The popular sport in Burnie is the Australian Rules football and Burnie Dockers Football Club is one of the city’s team. Rugby is also an important sport in the city. The Advocate is one of the leading newspapers in the city. The city has got community centers with an art gallery, police station, Supreme Court and others. Cheese making and papermaking are the most important industries in Brunie. Brunie port is the 5th largest container port.

Eminent personalities like Alastair Lynch who was an excellent footballer and Eddie Jones who was a rugby player and a coach also hail from Brunie, Tasmania.
