The small town of Cygnet is located in the Houn Valley of Tasmania. The town comes under the control of the Houn Valley Council. The population of Cygnet as per the 2006 census is 802. The town is 55 kilometers South West of Hobart. The temperature of the town ranges from 6.0 °C and 16.8 °C and it also receives an annual rainfall of 892 mm. The Cygnet bay was named as Port des Cygnes (Port of Swans) by Bruni D'Entrecasteaux in 1793 because of the large number of swans present in the area. Woodstock, Hounville and Hobart are the nearby cities from the town of Cygnet. The town is located 12 kilometers South East of Woodstock, 18 kilometer South of Hounville and 56 kilometer South West of Hobart. The bay with lot of beautiful swans is a site worth seeing. Port Cygnet also has a ship building company, established by a European settler John Wilson in 1834. Port Cygnet was declared a township in 1840. The name of the port has changed over the years from Port Cygnet to Lovett and later on to Cygnet. The town occupies two fuel stations, two supermarkets and a Commonwealth bank. One of the fuel stations has an ATM center.
