Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania, an island state of Australia. With a population of 4,88,700, it is the most populous city in the state. Hobart is located at the mouth of River Derwent and is an important seaport in Australia. Much of the city is also situated at the foothills of Mt. Wellington.

With an average maximum winter temperature of 13°C and an average maximum summer temperature of 21°C, Hobart has a mild maritime climate; it also enjoys four distinct seasons.

The city was founded in 1804 as a colony to detain prisoners and was known as Hobarton, named after the Colonial Secretary, Lord Hobart. It was named Hobart in 1875. At present, it is the administrative as well as the financial capital of Tasmania.
