The town of Longford is situated in the north-east region of Tasmania region lying 21 km to the south of Launceston off the Illawarra Road which is a road linking the Bass and Midland Highways.
The population of the town is 4,226 and comes under the Northern Midlands Council area.
The first settlers in the town came in the year 1813 and were pioneers relocated from the Norfolk Island. The present name was derived from the Longford Inn which was built by Newman Williatt in the year 1827.
Longford is a famous tourist destination for its historically important buildings including Brickendon and Woolmers and along with Perth it is an important regional centre of the Northern Midlands agricultural region.
