Richmond Gaol In 1825, the Richmond Gaol was constructed in Bathurst Street. The design of this jail was probably made by Colonial Architect David Lambe. The original structure was meant for locals and convict gangs who were charged with minor crimes. In 1832, the East and West wings and the gaoler’s house were added by John Lee Archer and converted the structure to a square.
The West wing comprises of the turnkey’s office and the men’s solitary cells while the East wing consisted of the women’s quarters and the cookhouse. This gaol is the oldest penal building in the country and is open to visitors from 09:00 to 17:00.
