Melbourne has a reputation as a backpacking hub for a reason, we loved it. If you're in town for a few days and on a budget, a little local know-how and these few simple tips will help you see this great city for less.
First thing: arriving at the airport, that is approx 45 mins far from the city centre, the cheapest way to get into town is via the Skybus. This will cost $12 rather than $50 for a taxi.
Head for "Acland Street" in St. Kilda (a block from the beach) for cheap accommodation, food and the company of fellow travelers.
Getting around is cheap or free if you use the free City Circle Tram. It runs every twelve minutes between 10am and 6pm, with extended hours at the weekend.
During the days you can take advantage of all sorts of low cost options like free guided tours of the two major zoos, Melbourne Zoo and the Werribee Open Range Zoo, or the impressive Royal Park.
