In the Cook Islands group of islands, the Southern islands group has an island called as Atiu. It is situated 187 kilometers to the Northeast of Rarotonga island. Atiu is comprised of five villages that are called as Tengatangi Village, Areora Village, Ngatiarua Village, Mapumai Village and Teenui Village. Atiu is basically a raised volcanic island. Low cliffs that have a height of 3 to 6 meters encircle the island, however there are several recesses where one can find small sandy coves. In the region of the makatea, one can find limestone caves and some of these are used as ancient burial sites. The landmass of Atiu island is 26.9 square kilometers. The other name of Atiu is Enuamanu which means “land of the birds.”
The population of this island was 571 in 2003.
All throughout the year, the island has a pleasantly sunny and warm climate. The main winds are the Southeast trade winds. The average temperature is 25 degrees Celsius.
