Cook Islands is a group of islands and the most populous amongst these is Rarotonga. The circumference of this island is 32 kilometers and the area is 67.19 square kilometers. The island is 4,500 meters above the ocean floor. The highest peak on this island is Te Manga which is 658 meters above sea level. “Raro” means “down” and “tonga” means “south.” Rarotonga is the youngest island amongst the Cook Islands southern group. The central massif in Rarotonga is the eroded remains of a mammoth volcanic pyramid existing in the past. The crags of this pyramid have formed razorback ridges and sawtooth peaks that are covered by tropical jungle.
As per the census of 2006, the population of Rarotonga is 14,153.
Rarotonga enjoys a equable climate. Winter is from May to October when the temperatures vary from 18 to 28 degrees Celsius. Summer is from November to April and the temperature alters from 21 to 29 degrees Celsius. Generally, the rainy season is from January to early May.
