Tourist Guide Chuuk
Chuuk is a group of small islands and atolls in and around a lagoon in the Pacific Ocean. With approximately 53,000 inhabitants, Chuuk is by far the most populous of the four states that make up the Federated States of Micronesia. The group of islands is sometimes referred to as ‘Truk’, a corruption of the original name.
The main islands of Chuuk are mountainous and surrounded by mangroves and palms. Not surprisingly, Chuuk enjoys a tropical climate and is fanned by trade winds for most parts of the year. Daytime temperatures range from 24 to 30°C; this varies since the islands lie at different altitudes.
The Chuukese follow a joint family system and are patrilineal. Respect for elders is a virtue constantly emphasised here. In addition to the Chuukese language, three other closely related dialects are spoken.
