There are no major health risks; nevertheless, health insurance is recommended. No vaccinations are required for entry, but vaccination against typhoid and polio is advised. Hepatitis A is present and vaccination against it is highly recommended. Eating food from the vendors is not advisable as the hygiene levels are low. Consumption of contaminated food can lead to diarrhoea and typhoid. Also, it is recommended that only bottled water be consumed.
There are no major threats to the safety of tourists on the island nation. Crime levels are low. However, some amount of caution against pick-pockets must be maintained. Modern Western swimwear may be considered immodest by local standards and those wearing such clothing outside of hotels that cater to tourists could be subject to harassment. The loss or theft of important documents should be reported immediately to the local police and the nearest Embassy or Consulate.
