Kosrae, an island in the Pacific Ocean, is one the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia. It constitutes the south-eastern part of the country and is just five degrees to the north of the equator.
The topography of Kosrae is mountainous with Mt. Finakol towering at over 2000 ft and characterised by rainforest vegetation and mangroves. Towards the ocean, there are pristine, sandy beaches. Kosrae has a tropical climate with temperatures averaging 27°C; it is hot and humid almost throughout the year. The best months to visit Kosrae are November to April.
The 7000-odd inhabitants of this island engage in fishing, agriculture and canoe building. They follow a patrilineal system, although they initially belonged to clans that were matrilineal. The shift in their social structure was in tandem with their conversion to Christianity.
