When in Kosrae, be sure to visit the Lelu ruins. These are the remnants of an ancient settlement and include high walls, houses, roads and graves, mostly constructed with slabs of basalt.
A hike up Mt. Finakol is a challenging yet exciting experience. Diving is also a popular tourist activity since the waters of Kosrae are home to a breathtaking array of marine species.
Kosrae is also a veritable ‘treasure island’. Legend has it that Bully Hayes, an American pirate buried his horde here, and it hasn’t yet been found.
Bird watching, fishing, canoeing and kayaking are other activities guaranteed to keep you pleasantly occupied.
September 8 is observed as Kosrae Liberation Day. The victory of the allied forces over Japan is commemorated by a week of celebrations from September 4-10. The rich culture and traditions of Kosrae’s people are showcased throughout this period.
