Palikir, the capital of the Federated States of Micronesia, is located in the
north-western corner of the island of Pohnpei, approximately 2200 kilometres
north east of Port Moresby.
Nearly 40.000 inhabitants live there.
The first humans arrived in Pohnpei around 200 AD, after migrating over several
centuries through the intervening islands (Nauru, Kosrae), from the Solomon
- Vanuatu area.
As the national capital, Palikir has the highest proportion of government employees,
drawn from all four states.
