Hailed as the land of stone money, the state of Yap is a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is home to about 11,000 inhabitants and forms the westernmost part of the Federated States of Micronesia.
The four main islands of Yap are partially composed of the remnants of a volcanic system. The islands enjoy a tropical climate with temperatures averaging 27°C; the first three months of the year constitute the dry season, and there is rainfall during the rest of the year. December to April are the best months to visit.
The Yapese live in dwellings called tabnuws and congregate in community centres or p’eebaeys for social activities. Traditional attire includes loin cloths for men and skirts made of leaves for women.
The people here speak four languages, which are peppered with words from European languages and Japanese.
