Lau Islands: Attractions and more...
The largest island in the northern group Vanau Balavu is home to a world class resort. A special permission from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Suva must be obtained in order to visit it. A large sea cave on the south-eastern tip is worth a visit as it is believed to have been inhabited more than 1,000 years ago. The island of Kaibu is a private island and only six guests are accommodated at one time. It has facilities for various sports like surfing, snorkelling, fishing etc.
Lakeba is the largest islands in the southern group and Tubou is the main village on the island. Several limestone cliffs and caves are found in the village of Nasaqalau. Especially famous is the Oso Nabukete literally translated means ‘too narrow for a pregnant woman to pass’; a cave called Qara Bulu used to serve as a prison.
The third group in the Lau Islands is called the Moala islands and consists of three main islands Moala, Totoya and Matuku.
