Tourist Guide Lautoka
Lautoka city is the second-largest city in the island nation of Fiji. It is situated on Viti Levu, which is the largest island in the country, and is only 25 km north of Nadi International Airport.
Legend has it that the city acquired its name as a result of a dispute between two tribal chieftains. They battled each other with spears, and as one hit the other, he screamed out ‘LAU-TOKA’, meaning ‘spear-hit’. Thus, the city was given that name.
The city is located in extremely picturesque surroundings; it is bounded by the Pacific Ocean to the west and pine trees and sugarcane fields to the east. Fiji’s primary industry is sugarcane cultivation and sugar manufacturing; Lautoka is the base for these operations. In fact, it is often called ‘Sugar City’. It is home to approximately 50,000 people, who are a mix of indigenous Fijian and Indian.
