The biggest and the most popular festival in the whole of French Polynesia is the Heiva i Tahiti. Celebrated in Papeete, this month long festival (June–July) represents Tahiti at its best, featuring traditional sports, parades, traditional dance and even a Mr and Miss Tahiti contest.
Heiva Rima’I is a month-long event showcasing Polynesian art and handicrafts. During the event, all the islands that constitute French Polynesia take part in a handicraft competition. The highlight of the event is the official inauguration and the parading for the Hiva Vaevae (the celebration of home rule).
Witness the most spectacular race—Hawaiki Nui Va’a—where more than 100 traditional canoes take to the race from Huahine to the paradise island of Bora Bora. One of the oldest events in the country is the Tahiti Nui Sunrise Marathon.
