Tourist Guide Papeete
Papeete, capital of French Polynesia, is located on the island of Tahiti, which
is part of the Society Islands, in French Polynesia.
The area that now constitutes the city was first settled by the British missionary
William Crook in 1818.
Queen Pomare IV moved her court to Papeete and made it her capital in the late
1820s and the town grew into a major regional shipping and transportation centre.
In 1842, France took control of the Tahitian Islands and made them a protectorate,
but Papeete was confirmed as capital.
Today, this charming city hosts the government offices, hospitals, banks, airline
and travel agencies, boutiques and black pearl shops and much more. But, though
it is growing rapidly, Papeete is still intimate and the ideal for lovely walks.
Papeete's international airport, Faaa International Airport, was completed and
opened in 1962.
