The central market, locally known as "Le Marche", is the heart of
the city. It has become a tourist and traveller's sightseeing favourite due
to its brightly coloured sellers and attractive Tahitian products.
There are a couple of interesting churches and a unique Pearl Museum.
The waterfront is really attractive, with a tree lined promenade and many good
restaurants.
From Papeete you can take helicopter tours above the island to the isthmus of
Taravao or join day trips to Moorea and Bora Bora.
It will certainly be great fun swimming in one of the many breath-taking waterfalls
near the city or spending a visit to the ancient Polynesian temples.
While in Papeete, if you love walking, climb Mount Marau and you will be rewarded
by an incredible view of the island.
