Hagatna in the older Chamorro spelling, Agana in the modern English, is the
lovely lively Guam’s Capital.
According to the 2000 Census, it has a population of 160,000 made up of Chamorros,
Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese and Koreans as well as US military personnel.
Hagatna has a very long history: Chamorros have occupied this village since
prehistoric days.
The Spanish governor, and later the American Naval Governors, made their home
here. Governor's palace was next to the cathedral in the Plaza de Espana. Unfortunately
both buildings, like most of the village, were destroyed during the World War
II, in 1944.
Today, a small scale agriculture provides families and local markets in Hagatna
with many tasty tropical fruits, green beans, squash, peppers and egg-plants.
Hagatna is served by Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport, 6 km northeast
of the city.
