Tourist Guide Abaiang
Abaiang, a rectangular-shaped atoll, is located in the Northern Kiribati. Formerly named Charlotte Island, Matthews or Six Isles, this coral atoll boasts a beautiful lagoon and quiet solitude.
The atoll’s population is about 3,628 residents and it occupies a total area of 16 square kilometres.
Southwest of Abaiang lies the Bingham Channel; this essentially connects the lagoon with the Pacific.
Abaiang enjoys a tropical climate; its hot and humid temperatures are cooled by trade winds.
In 1788, Captain Thomas Gilbert, a European explorer, named it Charlotte Island. The economy of Kiribati was primarily supported by the export of phosphate. However, with the resources being exhausted, copra and fish now form the bulk of production and exports. Tourism also plays a minor role in the economy of the nation.
