Noumea: Attractions and more...
The two main tourists resorts are the Ansa Vata Beach and the Baie des Citron.
But there is really a good choice of good sights to visit.
Starting with the great Tjibaou Centre, just north of Noumea, with its amazing
architecture. Designed by Renzo Piano, it was inspired by the buts of the native
Kanak people of New Caledonia.
Nature lovers will surely enjoy the Aquarium of Noumea and the Zoological and
Forest Park where you can see the rare endemic Cagou, the emblem of New Caledonia.
Other good places to see are the Place des Cocotiers, the Territorial Museum,
the Maritime History Museum, the Bernheim Library and the gothic Saint-Joseph's
Cathedral.
Attractions not far from Noumea include white sandy beaches, the Fatanaoue Caves
where the mummies of high Kanak chiefs are laid to rest and the Pierced Rock,
a cliff with caves ending with Le Bonhomme, a huge monolith sculpted by waves.
