Overview to visit Auckland at its best
Due to the hundreds of yachts dotting its two busy harbours, Auckland is popularly called the ‘City of Sails’. The Cross Harbour Swim, a yearly summer event, is a popular sports activity.
Within the city, Otara’s and Avondale’s famous flea markets provide colourful shopping experiences. For the culturally inclined, the Auckland Town Hall and Aotea Centre host conferences and cultural events such as theatre, kapa haka and opera.
The city surroundings offer a variety of tourism options, from the volcano on Rangitoto Island—Auckland’s most iconic natural feature—to the snow-capped peak of the nearby Mt. Ruapehu, the Waitomo caves and even a visit to Ngaruawahia, the home of the Maori Queen. Tour operators in Auckland offer various intense experiences, including eco-trails through rainforests or geothermal areas, and for the more adventurous, a Harley Davidson bike tour through some of the finest motorcycling roads in the world.
