This museum is housed in a building designed by Benjamin Mountfort in 1870 and lies on the eastern side of the Botanical Gardens. The 1st director, J.V.Haast, was a geologist who used his vast collection of moa bones to be exchanged with other museums to expand this museum. This museum has objects carved from greenstone and Maori woodcarvings. The main hall displays the history of the Antarctic exploration.
