Gisborne can be described as one of the unitary authorities in New Zealand; which has been known as a district as well as a region. The name ‘Gisborne’ has also been given to the biggest settlement within area of Gisborne.
Gisborne is reported to have a sunny, dry climate with loads of hours of sunshine. This area has around 2200 sunshine hours on an average every year. Precipitation (annual) differs between around 1000 mm (near coast) and 2500 mm (in higher inland country). Frosts take place a number of times every winter. Mild climate, in combination with rich ‘alluvial soil’, goes on to make Gisborne a perfect location with regards to growth of grapes, maize, kiwifruit, citrus fruits, and ‘subtropical fruits’.
On 20th of December, 2007, Gisborne got hit by an ‘earthquake’; which was reported to have Richter Magnitude of 6.8; having centered in ‘Hikurangi Trench’.
