Greymouth is located in the West Coast region of South Island in New Zealand.
This town is located at the junction of Grey River on the coastal plain at the foot of Southern Alps. People of Maori were earlier settlers before the European settlements and was known by the name of Mawhera which meant wide spread river mouth and is still another name for the Grey River. Earlier the town earned huge revenue from gold and coal mining. But the mining industry closed down and forestry took the new turn with this fishing also formed an integral part of earning revenue. Being a historic site the town witnessed the World War II gun emplacement at Cobden. Recently the economy of this town is based on fishing, mining, forestry and tourism also.
The climate of this place is quite comfortable and can be visited at any time of the year.
The population of this town comes to 9920 according to 2008 census.
