Tourist Guide Kaikoura
Kaikoura with a population of 3,200 is a small town on the east coast of Northland, New Zealand. Discovered by Captain Cook who mistook it to be an island, it was originally inhabited by the Moa Hunters. Kaikoura literally means crayfish, and the city is also famous for them.
Kaikoura is characterised by a rocky landscape with hills, beaches and lush green vegetation. The Kaikoura Mountains form the backdrop of this town, which is typified by a subtropical climate. Late spring being a good time to visit; the winter months (June, July and August) should be avoided.
At present, along with the tourism industry, the crayfish industry forms the backbone of city’s economy. Once a whaling station, Kaikoura now follows the policy of wildlife conservation and has become a centre for whale watching.
