Lake Tekapo is one among the largest parallel lakes of New Zealand running through the north-south and northern edge of Mackenzie Basis in Southern Island. It takes an area of approximately 83 sq. km and is situated around 700 meters altitude from the sea. The lake has its origin from the braided Godley River, which originates from the Southern Alps. In early days the lake was to its southern end, of the Tekapo River. During 1938 construction work began on a power station and was expected to be finished in 1943. But because of the war, the construction work has to be stopped for a while. Meantime control gates were made to fix the outflow of the lake to the Waitaki Dam downstream. Reformation work began in 1944 along with the power station which is called as Tekapo A. by a 4,600 ft tunnel. The lake water is diverted to the power station. The development of Upper Waitaki hydroelectric scheme facilitated feeding of water into a 26 km canal heading to Tekapo B on the banks of Lake Pukaki.
