The city of Nelson is located on the coast of Tasman Bay. With a population of 60,500, it is the administrative centre of the Nelson region which has a distinct coastal as well as mountainous landscape.
Nelson has mild climate and long hours of sunshine; it receives a moderate amount of rainfall. While Nelson can be visited all year round, January and February, being the warmest months of the year, are the best time to visit. The mountainous regions receive considerable amount of snowfall in the months of July and August.
The first settlers of Nelson about were members from the Maori tribe. Later, in February 1842, Europeans settled in Nelson. Being New Zealand’s second city, it was given city status in 1853.
The backbone of Nelson’s economy is seafood, horticulture, forestry and tourism.
