Situated in the heart of New Zealand’s North Island, the city of Roturoa spreads out over a volcanic plateau. Because of its location, there are many geothermal hotspots in Roturoa such as hot water geysers, mud pools, and lakes and ponds in the vicinity of the city.
Located on a relatively high altitude (950 m), Roturoa has a pleasant, temperate climate, with mild rainfall occurring throughout the year. It rarely snows in this region, which is aptly nicknamed the ‘Bay of Plenty’.
With a population of almost 70,000, this city and its surrounding regions are also the heartland of Māori culture. As compared to 13% in the rest of the country, about 30% of Roturoa’s population is Māori; the remaining inhabitants are of European descent. The tourism industry is the largest contributor to Roturoa’s economy.
