Koror, capital of the republic of Palau, lies on Koror Island in western Pacific,
1.303 km southwest of Guam and 853 km southeast of Manila.
The first inhabitants have been Austronesian speaking navigators from the Philippines
and Indonesia, probably as early as 2000 B.C.
Palau was first controlled by Great Britain from 1783 to 1885, then by Spain
until Germany took over in 1899. Japan occupied the island in 1914 and held
it until the defeat against America in WW II.
Since then, Palau remained a US Trust Territory and refused to join the Federated
States of Micronesia. It became nominally independent in 1994 but it still depends
heavily on US aid.
Today, Koror is an important commercial and tourist centre, with a copra-processing
plant.
It is also a good jumping-off point for trips to the Rock Islands, Peleliu,
Angaur and the other islands.
Koror city serves as Palau’s provisional capital, while a new capital
is being constructed at Melekeok in eastern Babelthuap.
The airport is a 25-minute drive from the city.
