Malakal is renowned for the deep and breathtakingly scenic dives. Commonly found water activities are snorkelling and scuba diving with on-the-water sports like canoeing, kayaking and surfing. Both beginners and advanced courses are available.
Reminding visitors of the fateful attack on the island are the ruins of Chuyo Maru, a 280-foot standard D freighter, in Malakal Anchorage and the Helmet Wreck, a sunken World War II Japanese ship, in Malakal Harbour.
The famous Micronesia Mariculture Demonstration Center, now known as Palau Mariculture Demonstration Center, is located in this island. This research marine laboratory involved in commercial and conservation projects is famous for its pioneering work on the culture of giant clams.
