Tourist Guide Lae
Lae, the capital of the Morobe province, is the second largest city in Papua New Guinea. It is located along the country’s north coast. With a population of around 120,000, it is considered the country’s industrial capital.
Born in the 1920s and 1930s after the gold rush in the town of Wau, Lae developed into the major cargo port and industrial centre it is today. It is also famous for having the longest road network in the country.
The climate is tropical, characterized by monsoons and high temperatures. There is great diversity in language and culture; the people maintain their agricultural lifestyle despite the industrial growth.
Given the high incidence of crime, tourists are advised to be vigilant, particularly after dark. The large number of potholes in the roads earned it the nickname ‘Pothole City’.
