Port Moresby, capital city of Papua New Guinea, is located on the southern
coast of New Guinea island, on Paga Point between Fairfax Harbour and Walter
Bay of the Gulf of Papua. Port Moresby is also the capital of the Central District
of Papua New Guinea.
As the city capital and administrative centre of Papua New Guinea, it has the
greatest population density in the country.
The city area was only occupied by Motu and Koitabu people for thousands of
years before 1873, when Port Moresby was discovered by the English Captain John
Moresby. About 15 years later, Great Britain established the colony of British
New Guinea here, and named Port Moresby the capital.
During World War II (1939-1945), Port Moresby was an important Allied military
base.
The Allies defeated Japanese naval forces destined for Port Moresby in the 1942
Battle of the Coral Sea.
Modern Port Moresby is in an area of rubber plantations and experimental livestock
and dairy farms.
Its exports are copra, coffee, rubber, plywood, timber, and gold. Brewing, tobacco
processing, the manufacture of handicrafts and concrete and fishing are the
main industries.
Unfortunately, because of a high crime rate, Port Moresby is consistently rated
as one of the most dangerous cities in the whole world.
