Tourist Guide Vaitupu island
Tuvalu’s largest island, Vaitupu consists of a large central island and several smaller islets. With a population of approximately 1,591 residents, it spans 5.6 square kilometers and includes swamps, mangroves, a coral reef and a large lagoon.
Vaitupu has a tropical climate. An ideal time to visit is between May and September; the risk of cyclones is reduced and the weather is enhanced by the easterly trade winds.
Tumaseu and Asau comprise the main villages on the island of Vaitupu. All major administrative buildings can be found here, including a church, a primary school and a post office.
Agriculture is the principal occupation in Vaitupu, but because of poor soil quality, uncertain rains and primitive catchments its contribution to the economy is limited. Coconuts form an integral part of the diet as well as trade.
